Overview

Stay Home Safely with Accessibility Remodeling

According to AARP, nearly 90% of adults age 65 and older want to remain in their current home as they age. But most homes were not built with accessibility in mind. A single step at the front door, a narrow bathroom doorway, or a bathtub with a high wall can turn a familiar home into a daily hazard.

Altieri & Sons Construction has been remodeling homes in Bucks County, Montgomery County, and Chester County since 1976. We understand how to modify a home for safety and comfort without making it feel like an institution. Every modification we install is designed to be functional, attractive, and to blend with your existing home.

Whether you need a single grab bar in the shower or a full accessible bathroom conversion with a curbless shower, comfort-height toilet, and wider doorways, we handle every step. We also work with families planning ahead, because the best time to make these modifications is before they become urgent.

Bathroom

Accessible Bathroom Modifications

The bathroom is the most dangerous room in the home for falls. These modifications reduce fall risk while maintaining a comfortable, attractive bathroom.

Curbless Showers

Zero-threshold shower entries that eliminate the step-over barrier. Properly sloped floors and linear drains keep water contained without a curb.

Grab Bars

Structural grab bars mounted to wall studs or blocking in showers, beside toilets, and at tub entries. Decorative finishes that coordinate with your fixtures.

Comfort-Height Toilets

ADA-height toilets (17-19 inches) that reduce the strain of sitting and standing. Easier for people with knee, hip, or mobility limitations.

Non-Slip Tile

Textured porcelain and ceramic floor tile with high coefficient-of-friction ratings specifically chosen for wet bathroom environments.

Handheld Showerheads

Adjustable-height slide bar showerheads that work for standing or seated showering. Includes a fixed head option for dual use.

Wider Doorways

Bathroom doorways widened to 32-36 inches for wheelchair and walker access. Includes swing-clear hinges that add 2 inches without reframing.

Kitchen

Kitchen Accessibility Upgrades

Pull-Out Shelves

Retrofit existing cabinets with full-extension pull-out shelves that eliminate reaching into deep cabinet spaces. Reduces bending and strain.

Lever-Style Hardware

Replace round knobs with lever handles on doors, faucets, and cabinets. Easier to operate for people with arthritis or limited grip strength.

Lowered Countertops

Work surfaces at multiple heights including a 30-34 inch seated-use section for wheelchair users or those who prefer to work sitting down.

Task Lighting

Under-cabinet LED lighting, motion-activated night lights, and illuminated switches that improve visibility and reduce fall risk in the kitchen.

Home Access

Safe Entry & Navigation

Wheelchair Ramps

Code-compliant ramps built with proper slope (1:12 ratio), handrails, and non-slip surfaces. Wood, composite, and aluminum options that match your home exterior.

Wider Doorways

Interior and exterior doorways widened to 32-36 inches. We reframe the opening, install new trim, and match existing finishes so the modification blends in.

Stairlift Preparation

Electrical outlets, structural reinforcement, and wall blocking installed so a stairlift can be mounted without additional construction later.

First-Floor Bedroom

Convert a dining room, den, or office into a fully functional bedroom with closet, lighting, and proximity to a first-floor bathroom.

Threshold Modifications

Eliminate trip hazards at exterior doors, room transitions, and sliding door tracks with beveled thresholds, ramps, and flush transitions.

Handrails & Lighting

Continuous handrails on both sides of all stairways, motion-activated stairway lighting, and illuminated light switches throughout the home.

Common Questions

Aging in Place FAQs

Medicare generally does not cover home modifications. However, Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) waivers in Pennsylvania can cover some accessibility modifications for eligible individuals. Long-term care insurance policies may cover certain modifications. Additionally, the VA Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) and Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grants provide funding for eligible veterans. We recommend checking with your specific insurance provider and contacting your county Area Agency on Aging for local resources.
PACE (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly) is a Medicare and Medicaid program that provides comprehensive care for people 55 and older who qualify for nursing home care but want to remain in the community. PACE programs in Pennsylvania can cover certain home modifications needed for safety and independence. Bucks County residents can contact the Bucks County Area Agency on Aging at 215-348-0510 for eligibility information.
Yes. The VA offers several grant programs for eligible veterans: the Specially Adapted Housing (SAH) grant (up to approximately $109,000 in 2026), the Special Housing Adaptation (SHA) grant (up to approximately $44,000), and the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant (up to $6,800 for service-connected disabilities or $2,000 for non-service-connected). These grants can cover wheelchair ramps, accessible bathrooms, widened doorways, and other modifications. Contact your local VA office or visit va.gov for eligibility details.
Timeline depends on scope. Installing grab bars and a handheld showerhead can be done in a single day. Converting a tub to a curbless shower typically takes 5 to 7 days. A full accessible bathroom remodel takes 3 to 6 weeks. Widening doorways takes 1 to 3 days per opening. Building a wheelchair ramp takes 2 to 5 days. We can phase work to minimize disruption, completing critical safety improvements first.
Home modifications made for medical reasons may be partially deductible as medical expenses on your federal tax return, to the extent they exceed 7.5% of your adjusted gross income. Modifications that are considered medically necessary (such as wheelchair ramps, grab bars, and accessible bathrooms prescribed by a physician) may qualify. The deductible amount is the cost of the modification minus any increase in home value it creates. Consult a tax professional for your specific situation.
